An Educated Choice: School District Partnerships that Pay Off for Cities
Track: Implementing
Local elected leaders are often held accountable for the quality of public education even when they have no direct
control over schools. In response, city leaders are increasingly discovering that city-school partnerships not only improve local schools, but can have a significant pay off for the city by boosting the overall quality of life and supporting economic development. In this workshop, panelists will discuss creative school-district partnerships that promote school readiness, bring community resources into neighborhood schools, and promote linkages between school and work.

Audrey Hutchinson, Program Director, Education and Afterschool, NLC

Practical Strategies to Attract Economic Investment
In order to better position your community to attract industry, private investment, a sustainable tax base and
high quality, good-paying jobs, it is critical to have a realistic understanding of your community’s potential “deal breakers” as well as capacity to overcome them. During this workshop, participants will engage with a self-assessment tool to evaluate and interpret their jurisdiction’s characteristics and processes that are directly linked to the factors affecting local investment.

James Mitchell, Jr., Council Member, Charlotte, North Carolina; NLC Second Vice President

Increasing Access to Alternative Forms of Transportation in Your Community
Track: Infrastructure / Sustainability
Getting people out of their cars and into alternative forms of transportation isn’t always easy given the structure of
communities. Lack of adequate infrastructure for bike lanes, walking paths, and various forms of mass transit cause
consumers to rely on driving and decrease opportunities for improved environmental, social, physical, and economic
health. This workshop will focus on what opportunities exist for alternative forms of transportation in cities, how to
finance such projects, and how to educate the public about alternative transportation.
Moderator:
Steve Elkins, Councilmember, Bloomington, Minnesota
Speakers:
Darwin Hindman, Mayor, Columbia, Missouri
Fred Abousleman, Executive Director, National Association of Regional Councils, Washington, D.C.

More than Meets the Eye: Bringing Investment into Previously Overlooked Markets
Track: Implementing
This workshop will explore a new approach to assessing the market size, strength, and stability in traditionally overlooked neighborhoods within cities. By addressing key barriers to private investment in typically overlooked markets – namely a lack of information and negative stereotyping – these assessments can help cities attract critical business investment and improve access to mainstream services, such as banking and grocery stores, for otherwise underserved residents.
Moderator:
David G. Wallace, Research Scholar for Economic Development,** International Council of Shopping Centers
Washington, D.C.

Jamie Alderslade, Director of External Relations, Social Compact, Washington, D.C.

The Recovery Act and Your City
Since the President signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act last February, its impact has been widely
debated. Over $260 billion in Recovery Act funding is targeted to flow through states, cities, and towns over the
next several years. What impact, so far, has the Recovery Act had on your community? On your residents? What are some of the challenges the Recovery Act has meant for your community and how is your city addressing them? How is your city taking advantage of opportunities you now have because of the Recovery Act? Come share your stories and learn from your colleagues.
